Melamine Boards Are Made

Melamine Resin Coating

The melamine resin is mixed with formaldehyde, which reacts to create a hard plastic material. This resin is then molded into sheets that will serve as the coating for the board.

Application to Core Material

The melamine-coated sheet is then pressed onto a substrate such as particleboard, plywood, or MDF. The substrate provides the strength and structure, while the melamine laminate gives it a smooth, durable, and often decorative surface.

Low Pressure Laminate (LPL)

Melamine boards are classified as low-pressure laminates (LPL) because they are bonded at relatively low pressure (300-500 psi). This is different from high-pressure laminates (HPL), like Formica, which are bonded under much higher pressures.

Structural composition of Melamine Board

Surface paper

It is placed on the top layer of the decorative board to protect the decorative paper. It makes the surface of the board highly transparent after heating and pressing. The surface of the board is hard and wear-resistant. It is required to have good water absorption performance, be white and clean, and be transparent after impregnation.

Decorative paper

That is, wood grain paper, which is an important part of the decorative board. It has a base color or no base color and is printed into various patterns. It is placed under the surface paper and mainly plays a decorative role. It is required that the paper has good covering power, impregnation property and printing performance.

Cover paper

Also known as titanium white paper. Generally, when making light-colored decorative boards, it is placed under the decorative paper to prevent the underlying phenolic resin from penetrating to the surface. Its main function is to cover the color spots on the surface of the base material, and it is required to have good covering power.

Bottom paper

It is the base material of the decorative board and plays a mechanical property role for the board. It is impregnated with phenolic resin glue and dried. During production, several layers can be determined according to the use or the thickness of the decorative board.
